THE ENQUIRY BEGINS

lately he has been different somehow. All the time I have known him, and watched him grow up from boyhood to be a man, he has shown the most loving and lovable disposition. Then, not yet two weeks ago, the day after the ball at Carlton House Terrace, in fact-he began to change."
" Change?" asked Royston. "In what way?"
" Oh, he became very short tempered and irritable. Preoccupied too-as though he had something on his mind. Yet I never knew of any foolish or wrong thing he had done. He began to talk of seeking adventure a few weeks ago ; but he soon dropped that."
" Ah !" cried Royston. " Did he threaten to do anything foolish? "
The Baron looked startled. "He certainly said he would like to give us all a shock-or something equally absurd. But he wasn't well that morning, and I'm sure he did not mean it."
" Could he have been carrying on some youthful escapade without your knowing," demanded Royston. " Or could it happen," he asked again as a more sinister thought struck him, " that someone had got a hold of some sort over him, and was using him for their own purpose? "
" Monsieur," cried the Baron, "you terrify me! What could he possibly do without my knowing? Or who could want to get the young man into his power?"
" Well, Baron," answered Royston drily, "you have yourself admitted that you don't know whose message he waited for that night. And as for anyone seeking to get him into their power-surely that is the very reason of your having been chosen to protect him."
" Oh, Monsieur Royston, forgive me, I am so dull to-day," the old man cried. " I never thought of that."
