THE MAY RACES

Still! Veronica was not satisfied with him to-day. Even as they sought the ferry which was by now bringing the two victorious oarsmen across to them, she noticed the Prince slip back into his shell. He was blankly gazing away across the water, and his face was set in an ugly scowl. For one astonishing moment she thought she must be looking at the wrong man ; and that she had turned to see a stranger by mistake. Even his profile seemed different somehow or other ! Then, at last, he moved and looked at her-and she felt foolish at the idea. But she was conscious that she missed the response in his eyes, which so often lately had spoken their own message of good fellowshipeven if they had not said something more !
Of course, Bunny was full of life! There was no longer any trace of the hang-dog look he had worn earlier in the day. A big smile covered his face, and he beamed on all and sundry. Ajax on the other hand was rather quieter if anything.
" Bunny is very excited," he said as they came up to the two on the bank.
" And Ajax thinks he is quite cool!" scoffed Bunny in retaliation. "Well, what did you think of the race? "
" Splendid," cried Veronica looking at Ajax as she spoke. "But don't forget you have only had one heat. There are three other days to follow. Oh, cheer up!" she laughed as Bunny's face fell.
" I'd forgotten that," said he seriously.
" Leave him to mope, and perhaps we'll get a chance to say a few words before he recovers," said Ajax agressively.
" Hullo," cried Bunny suddenly. "There's our friend ! "
" What friend? " asked Veronica excitedly. She was ready for anything!
