THE MAY RACES

language of the land of his birth. And when he read it his head swam dizzily.
" You are playing a very dangerous game. There is one who seeks your life. Be warned in time. You may suffer in the place of another."
That was all the note said ; but it filled the young man with a greater terror than he had ever known. He knew who that `other' was-but it was too late to withdraw. He had burnt his boats! And now the blow had fallen ! Someone knew his secret ! He had expected this ever since ... but his mind refused to work any more ! Someone not only knew all about him but had some other Plans of his own to fostey! ... But, after all, he had the blood of Kings in his veins and strangely enough he responded to it now. It had never stirred him before in this way. He had never seemed to worry much about the turn of Fortune's wheel which had given him a King for a father. But now it was almost as though the charm of the girl beside him had touched a responsive chord. As she clapped her hands in sheer joy at the result of the race (for the historical `bump' took place just where they were standing) he bravely forced himself to smile at her.
" Wasn't that topping !" she cried, her face flushed with excitement and pleasure. Her blue eyes sparkled joyfully as she spoke; making the young man beside her wish he was not committed to a future planned out by others whom he was compelled to obey. But then-he found himself asking-need he obey? Could he not frustrate their schemes somehow, and win this girl? Could he not carry her off somewhere-by force if necessary? Poor young man ! there are many better things than being the puppet of statesmen and schemers !
