The boat was leaping like a mad thing through the water ; straining her utmost to overtake the rival crew ahead. Every stroke lifted the bows bodily out of the river ; and then, in between the strokes, left them to slip through the track made by the boat in front. Time had ceased to exist as far as they were concerned.
" You're going up !-you're going up! " was the sudden yell from among the mass of confusion on the bank. Bells and whistles and rattles were all going at it, full blast ; being almost drowned by the frantic yells of the supporters who raced along on foot.
