CHAPTER XIII
THE MAY RACES

THE first day of the races came at last. That morning, for some reason or other, Bunny was overcome by an unusual air of sobriety from which even Ajax could not rouse him. He seemed preoccupied-distrait. He had, poor fellow, an unaccountable emptiness in the region of his solar plexus. This puzzled him not a little, for he had eaten a good breakfast. It was true that he had partaken of a very light lunch ; but then, that was all part of these agonising days of training-besides one cannot row after eating a lot of food ; especially if the day is so hot as this one was. Bunny's position in the boat was at 'six'; which meant that he was there because he had a hefty lot of `beef and brawn' and could use it in getting the boat along. Ajax rowed at 'seven'-just in front of him ; and many a time Bunny had gained confidence just by watching the big strong back of his friend as they rowed 'all out' in their practices.
But to-day he could find no consolation anywhere. Nervous? Not a bit of it! Just let anyone mention that to him, and hear what he would say! Ajax had already hinted at something of the sort only that very morning, and nearly got his head snapped off for his pains. However, anticipation does not last for ever, and they soon had to go down to the river for their `heat.'
