THE LETTERS AGAIN

"You are all right. We haven't lost anyone," said Bunny soothingly. "I'm awfully sorry, old chap. It was all my fault."
Prince Carl seemed to remember everything all at once. Swiftly a look of resentment and anger replaced the fear that had spread over his face, and for a moment he seemed as though he would strike Bunny.
" Half a mo," cried Ajax, laying his hand on the halfraised arm. "Go slow, old thing. It was only a joke."
The Prince seemed to realise that he was behaving rather foolishly, and he sank down onto the sofa. Ajax gave him another drink of soda water which he gulped down in big mouthfuls. It revived him considerably, and with returning consciousness evidently came the remembrance of the letters he had been reading.
" The letters," he gasped, still half dazed. "Where are the letters? "
" If you mean those you dropped on the floor, I picked them up. They are on your desk."
The young man on the sofa did not seem to understand that Bunny had seen what the letters were. He seemed suddenly to realise that he had said enough. Seizing the bundle he tied the ribbon round it ; a look of hostility slowly developing in his handsome face. He glared at Bunny.
" I'm awfully glad you got your mother's letters back, Carl," Bunny said in order to try and show how sorry he really was. "Who had them-Ivan? "
" That is my own affair," was the curt reply. "In any case that closes the matter. Ivan had nothing to do with them at all!"
Ajax was furious at the Prince's childish display of rudeness ; but he held his tongue.
" Royston won't be needed now," he said, fumbling for a place in the conversation.
