too; but he knew that he still had much to learn, and oceans of preparations to absorb, before he would be fit to undertake the duties which would one day be his.
Perhaps in those few moments Bunny changed from a boy to a man, who can say? But a new and a very real responsibility was going to be the first fruits of his desire for achievement. At that moment Prince Gustave tapped him on the shoulder.
" Can you spare me a moment or two, Lord Valentine? " he asked.
" Why, yes ! Certainly, sir !" said Bunny impulsively. "I will just explain to my father, and then join you in that room over there. It will be private."

The old diplomat nodded understandingly, and went slowly across the marble floor. The room was open to his gaze, and as he halted on the threshold he caught sight of a magnificent oil painting hanging on the opposite wall. The only painting in the room, it caught the eye at once. It was a life-sized portrait of Lady Veronica! His eyes softened and his impatience completely left him as he looked across at it. He was thinking that this was 'beauty' indeed ! The smooth pink and white of the skin, the fair golden hair, the fluffy lines of the gauze-like wrap which just allowed the sky-blue dress beneath to show through in folds of misty colour-all called to his mind the countryside of England which he loved so much.
