CHAPTER X
THE BALL

CAMBRIDGE, with its old-world peace and quietude, seemed very far away to Bunny that night, whilst he stood beside his parents as they received their guests. He was still young and enthusiastic enough to have faith in his fellow men. Ideals were very real things to him ; and he had yet to learn that men would sell their country or even their souls, so long as they could gain their own selfish ends. The wonderful pageantry of the scene before him filled him with awe. He believed in it ! To him it meant something!-as indeed after all, it did ! It was the carrying-out of the highest traditions of his race-part of a scheme which had evolved and grown up through centuries of test and trial, and had come out top-had made the British Empire, in fact!
As beautiful stately women in magnificent gowns sparkling with jewels passed by, accompanied by men whose 'Orders' flashed as they bowed their greetings to the host and hostess, Bunny watched them with conscious pride. These were men who had helped to make history. Men with clean cut features and firm straight mouths ; men by whose knowledge and skill the far flung outposts of Empire were held together; men in whose eyes could be seen much deeper and expressive evidence of `work done' than ever the jewelled Orders and Decorations on their breasts could show. Bunny longed to launch his own barque on the wonderful sea of experience and do his share
