TREACHERY

"They frightened me," said Ajax. "I shouldn't like to get on the wrong side of him. What do you think Carl? "
" I don't quite know," was the rather strange answer. " I think I have met him somewhere before."
" How can you? " expostulated Bunny. " He has only just come to England; and you have been here for nearly eight years-since you were twelve."
" I know," replied Carl dreamily, "That's why it seems so strange."
Two days after this, Bunny and Ajax made a very important discovery-though, at the time, it was not thought very much of. It came about like this! They were hurrying from a lecture to have lunch with Carl when they got rather a surprise. They had just entered Magdalen, when coming towards them in the distance they saw Carl and a very handsome woman. For a moment they did not quite know what to do ; then Bunny said :
" We can't turn back now-let's face him."
" But who is the lady? " asked Ajax softly. "She's a striking-looking woman, isn't she? "
Indeed she was! Though she was very quietly dressed.
" Good Heavens," cried Bunny, in a moment or so. "It isn't Carl at all-it's that little beast we saw in the motor car that day."
" So it is," said Ajax thoughtfully. "I wonder who the lady is? "
The two had drawn almost abreast with them now; but the young man who was so like Carl did not notice them. He seemed to be very annoyed with the woman, and was talking quite excitedly to her in a foreign tongue as they went past.
