THE QUEEN DECIDES

and Heaven knew they needed good government ! There is no need for us to worry about the politics of Bulkrania, however, for they had nothing to do with
the King's death-although there was always ferment of some sort seething in the breasts of certain dis satisfied people. The Chief of Police knew what the reason for the murder was-and so did the three friends. They were thinking about it- now, as they sat there in the late afternoon sun. When King Josef was a young man at the Army Academy he did a very foolish thing in marrying the daughter of the Colonel Commandant. To begin with, the marriage was not legal in view of the fact that he was the heir to the throne and could not marry a`commoner.' Also it turned out to be most unhappy ; for the secrecy which the young man had insisted on did not suit the relatives of his morganatic wife, and they caused her to rebel against the situation. Eventually the two separated, and young Josef returned to Court, a very much sadder and wiser man. One of the last things his disappointed father did, before dying suddenly and leaving the throne to him, was to arrange his marriage with the present Queen. Josef had been inclined to rebel at first ; but when things turned out so well he soon began to forget all about his previous unsuccessful experiment in matrimony, and gladly began a new life.
There was one, however, who had not forgotten !
Whatever else the three old stalwarts thought about the past, they each of them finished at the same point: "Thank goodness there had been no children of that unfortunate marriage!"
" Who is this coming? " asked the Admiral, suddenly breaking the silence as a man appeared in sight at the far end of the rose garden.
