COMPLICATIONS

before the lecture. Ajax had got there first, and kept Bunny's place for him. He came tearing in just about a minute before time ; and breathlessly explained that he had just come off best in a scuffle over a bicycle. He had found a machine without an owner leaning against the wall outside college. Thinking it would be useful to get along to Peterhouse, he had moved it from its place. Just, however, as he had put one leg over the saddle, a hand gripped his gown and a voice cried :
" Hi! that's mine!"
Only by great strength and presence of mind had he managed to tear himself away-only too literally, as it happened; for he had left a large lump of his gown in the exasperated owner's hands.
" And here I am!" he finished breathlessly. Then he caught sight of his friend's face and pulled up-lie evidently had something exciting to say, too!
" I say, Bunny," whispered Ajax, now he had the chance. "Have you heard the latest?"
" No! Go on, I'll buy it," answered the other, half suspecting a trap.
" Oh, it's true enough," said Ajax. "Do you remember that foreign Prince, or whatever he is, we saw on the river yesterday? Well, his rooms have been broken into, and a lot of valuable papers stolen."
" Good Heavens!" answered Bunny. "How do you know? "
" My Gyp told me. His brother is the porter at NTagdalen. They are trying to keep it quiet, I believe."
" So it seems," answered Bunny caustically.
" But, don't you see?" said the exasperated Ajax. "Don't you remember that foreign blighter on the river bank yesterday? How interested he was in the Prince? And now his letters are stolen."
