A PRINCE AND A PLOT

as things turned out, it was going to prove rather unfortunate for him. Still, how was he to know of all the intrigue and scheming that were going on around him? How was he to know of the sinister power that ever lingered by the side of the Queen his motherconstantly watching ... and waiting? ... She had always sought to spare him this dreadful knowledge in the past.
By the law of succession, the Prince was to come to the throne on his twenty-fifth birthday. Meanwhile the country was being governed by a Council of Regency, of which the Queen was President. But it was an anxious time for all concerned with the welfare of Bulkrania. Great forces were at work within this little country nestling away among the hills in the southern corner of Europe. Only the power of the Crown held them in check.... And this the Queen knew, only too well.
It was hardly her fault that Carl had been a lonely youngster ; for the same tragedy which robbed Bulkrania of its King, deprived Carl of his childhood. She had never dared allow him the freedom that other boys have. Always was there that lingering yet definite evidence of something at work against hersomething that seemed to gloat over her misfortunessomething that seemed to threaten still more horror and evil to come ! However, she faced her unseen enemy with a brave heart, and took the law into her own hands. After the assassination of the King she kept Carl in strict seclusion-only allowing very few people to see him. Among these were his young cousin Nicholas-a boy of his own age-and Yolanda, the daughter of a neighbouring Royal House. Then at the end of two years she secretly sent him off to school in England.
