CHAPTER III
A PRINCE AND A PLOT

THE one around whom all this intrigue and interest were rapidly gathering was completely ignorant of the excitement he was causing. Whilst Bunny and Ajax were mutually expressing, in rather violent terms, their opinion of the bearded stranger who had just left them so unceremoniously, he was thoughtfully making his way back in the punt to the landing stage. Every now and then he would darkly cast a brooding eye at the figure of his guardian on the bank. He hated this everlasting surveillance -he could not see any need for being so carefully watched over all the time. Ever, in fact, since that awful day, when as a boy of ten, he had escaped death by the fraction of a second.
Poor Prince Carl ! He certainly needed Bunny's generous sympathy ! And, indeed, in a short time he was going to get practical experience of it, although,
