THE STRANGER

" A man like that would find out anything hewanted," answered Bunny sagely. " He wouldn't let anything come in his way.
" Then what was it he wanted from us?" asked Ajax.
" We'll learn that later," said Bunny.
And he was certainly right on that score !

About two o'clock that same afternoon two men might have been seen driving along Trinity Street in a high-powered car. A casual observer would not have noticed anything out of the ordinary about them, though their conversation would certainly have given him a shock!
" There he is," suddenly said the younger of the two-a young man of eighteen or nineteen. There was a tenseness in his voice which spoke of suppressed excitement. "He has just come out of Matthews'."
" Are you quite sure it's he? " asked the older man, anxiously gripping the wheel. He was driving slowly at the time, and his foot sought the accelerator as he spoke.
" Yes! " cried the other. " Go on ! You can get him now-as he steps off the pavement. Sound your horn!"
It was all over in a second ! The car leaped like a live thing at the unsuspecting man, as he prepared to cross the road. It all happened so quickly and so naturally that no one would ever have guessed that it was not all just an unfortunate accident.
But there it was ... an elderly man lay bleeding on the pavement ... a silent form to testify that two men had achieved yet one more step in a series
of carefully thought-out plans. . . .
