" Well, you see, it's just the second day of term," answered Ajax, "and we haven't got into our stride. Otherwise we are pretty full up. In fact we will have to stay up at the end of term to finish one of our courses."
Bunny looked quickly at their vis-h-vis; something had struck him.
" Why! you have learned some of our ways already," he said. "You have found out that `lekker' is our way of saying 'lecture'."
The other bit his lip with vexation. He had just realised that he had nearly given himself away. But he recovered himself quickly.
" Oh!" he said. " I have read all about your ways. You often do that sort of thing: ` brekker' for breakfast; ` bedder' for bedroom; ` Rugger' for Rugby, and all the rest. But tell me," he said changing the conversation into safer channels. "When do you get your Blue? At the May races? " It would have been terribly small talk-if there had not been such a desperate reason for it all!
" Good lor', no! " cried Bunny amused ; and Ajax laughed outright. "Oh, no! You have to be pretty hot for that, I can tell you! "
" My friend quite expects to get his, one day," supplemented Ajax, giving Bunny a sly look. "He is a great oarsman you know!"
If the stranger saw through this banter, he did not betray himself. He still watched the river. Surely it was nearly time, he was thinking?
