CHAPTER XIII
THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY

text-books, treatises, and monographs of a scientific or philosophic character, one of the more recent being The Work, Wealth, and Happiness of Mankind. A man of tremendous energy, originality, and imagination, Wells has appealed to many different sections of the reading public, and shows no sign of losing his hold upon their interest. His prophetic fantasy The Shape of Things to Come has been adapted for the screen.
The Romans had a proverb to the effect that during war literature is at a standstill. This was emphatically not true of the war of 19r4-rgr8, which brought forth a remarkable harvest of young poets, as well as stimulating their elders to fresh and in some cases great efforts. The level attained by the young War poets was high, and many of them, still in the land of the living, have continued to do good work after the abnormal stimulus of the four years of tempest had spent itself. One poet deserves mention who died in the second of those years, though not on the field of battle. This was James Elroy Flecker, 1884-1915. A parson's son and an Oxford graduate, he studied Oriental languages at Cambridge prior to entering the British Consular Service, and held posts first at Constantinople and then at Beirut. Much of his magnificent verse is warmly steeped in the intense. colours of the East. His poem-play, Hassan, first called The Golden journey to Samarkand, was staged in London seven years after his death at Davos, in Switzerland, from consumption.
Among the actual War poets the name of Rupert Brooke, 1887-1915, will probably stand out with emphasis in the time to come, not only because of the poignant quality of his verse, but also because of the tragic circumstances of his death. The son of a master
